The ANU BIPOC Department acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples, and pays respect to their Elders past, present, and emerging.
Key Updates and Action Items:
1. Racism Report 2023 and 2024:
The 2023 Racism Report documentary is now available on the website. An email was sent to the Vice-Chancellor regarding the report, and a meeting request has been made.
Work on the 2024 Racism Report is ongoing, with a focus on a quantitative survey and data analysis. Ethics approval is still pending, meaning the report will not be released this year.
2. BIPOC Ball Updates:
The BIPOC Ball tickets sold out quickly, and discussions are ongoing about finalizing the budget and details for catering (pizza platters). Decorations might be scaled back to allocate more funds to food.
A Ball meeting needs to be organized to discuss final preparations, and the Social Officer is working on the decor within an $800 budget.
3. Website and Constitutional Amendments:
A Web Designer role will be added to the constitution. An overall review of the constitution is currently behind schedule, but amendments will be submitted for review next week.
Website policies are being updated to reflect the BIPOC Department’s structure under ANUSA and to improve transparency regarding user data privacy.
4. Social Events:
BASC Mixer has been postponed due to venue issues. The event might move to Blue Eyes as an alternative location.
Paint and Sip Event was a success with 15-20 attendees. Future art-related events are being brainstormed, including mood board and zine events.
5. Finances and Reimbursements:
The treasurer will process reimbursements this week. The team is exploring cost-effective venues for Chai & Chats events, which have had low attendance recently.
6. BIPOC Base Maintenance:
Several improvements to the BIPOC Base were discussed, including soap dispensers, shelf storage, and replacing mugs. Emails will be sent to library borrowers.
7. Advocacy and Publicity:
The team is working on improving SEO for better search engine performance. Website traffic has been strong, with the Racism Report screening page driving the most engagement recently.
Accessibility features have been added to the website. Mobile performance is being addressed in the coming weeks.
8. Miscellaneous:
A Zine launch party is planned for Week 4. Discussions with the Indigenous Department about collaboration are ongoing.
Next Steps:
Organize a BIPOC Ball meeting.
Complete constitutional amendments and website updates by next week.
Continue preparations for upcoming events and website optimization.
