Acknowledgement of Country

The ANU BIPOC Department acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples, and pays respect to their Elders past, present, and emerging.

Key Updates and Action Items:

1. Racism Report Progress:

  • The team met with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and other directors at a student forum, where the Racism Report was discussed. The reception was not very positive.

  • Meetings with other key figures, including the Vice-Chancellor and Residential Directors, are scheduled after mid-semester break to continue discussions.

  • Planning for the 2024 Racism Report is underway, with the goal to gather more media coverage.

2. BIPOC Ball Final Preparations:

  • The Ball is approaching, and attendees are reminded to arrive before 7:20 PM with valid IDs. Sales will close by 12 PM Friday, and there will be no door tickets.

  • Measures are in place to ensure safety, particularly because tickets were sold to under-18s, and alcohol will be served.

  • Volunteer tickets have been refunded, and the team has made $6,347.37 in total earnings from the Ball so far.

3. Constitutional Amendments and Website Updates:

  • Discussions around the Web Designer role are still ongoing, and no nominations have been received yet.

  • The constitution review is in progress, and website policies have been updated, pending confirmation from Maitrey to ensure they are live on the website.

4. BASC Mixer Venue Confirmed:

  • The BASC Mixer will be held at Blue Eyes, with a condition that it takes place on a Thursday. Final details regarding costs and equipment (DJ decks, speakers) are being confirmed.

5. Zine Launch Success:

  • The Zine launch event was successful, with $134 made from it. A Zine-making night is planned for Week 8 or 9.

  • The team is preparing for a mood board and zine event, with equipment and materials being organized.

6. Publicity and Graphics Updates:

  • DJ, band, and dance graphics for the Ball have been posted, with additional housekeeping and event graphics scheduled for later in the week.

  • Promotion for the West Papua panel is being prepared, with a graphic expected over the weekend.

7. Event Ideas and Planning:

  • Future events, including a potluck and study sessions, are being planned for Week 5/6 or after the mid-semester break.

  • The team is also planning a TikTok interview series asking BIPOC students about their favorite media.

Next Steps:

  • Finalize Ball preparations, including safety protocols and equipment.

  • Continue discussions around the Web Designer role and constitution updates.

  • Confirm all arrangements for the BASC Mixer and ensure proper promotion.

  • Prepare for upcoming events, including the potluck, study sessions, and zine-making night.
