The ANU BIPOC Department acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples, and pays respect to their Elders past, present, and emerging.
Key Updates and Action Items:
1. BIPOC Ball Success and Incident:
The Ball was a great success with over 200 attendees and a total of $6,722.29 earned.
However, an incident at the Ball was noted, and all exec members were reminded of the importance of representing the department with respect at events.
Volunteers have been refunded, and the team needs to return $4,000 borrowed from ANUSA.
2. ANUSA Governance Review:
ANUSA’s Governance Review has proposed abolishing department constitutions, which would reduce departmental autonomy. This proposal will be discussed and possibly opposed at the upcoming OGM (Week 9 or 10).
Selena and Precious are reviewing the Governance Review, particularly the sections related to the constitution.
3. BASC Mixer Preparations:
The BASC Mixer is scheduled for Thursday, Week 8, at Blue Eyes. The venue will be provided for free if at least 50 attendees are confirmed.
Basic drinks will be discounted to $10, and cocktails to $15. The team is confirming equipment, including DJ decks and speakers, with one more DJ possibly being added.
4. Web Designer Role and Constitution Review:
The Web Designer role and Constitution review are on hold until more clarity is gained from ANUSA’s Governance Review.
5. Website and Advocacy Updates:
The department’s website continues to perform well, with the West Papua blog post becoming the most popular page.
The team has introduced new features, including an unsubscribe button for newsletters to comply with spam laws. Advocacy campaigns are being planned, with a structured process for assessing goals and impact.
A photo gallery for the website is under development, while some content from Chia and KB’s pages is still pending.
6. Publicity and Upcoming Posts:
The Publicity Officer has been busy with assessments but plans to post about the BASC Mixer next week.
More infographics and a post about the website are expected after the break.
7. Zine Night Preparations:
Sabina is gathering equipment for the Zine-making night, and further updates are expected soon.
Next Steps:
Prepare for the OGM and discuss concerns around the Governance Review.
Finalize BASC Mixer preparations, including confirming DJs and equipment.
Continue developing the advocacy page and photo gallery on the website.
Ensure timely posts and publicity for upcoming events, including the BASC Mixer and Zine Night.
