Acknowledgement of Country

The ANU BIPOC Department acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples, and pays respect to their Elders past, present, and emerging.

Key Updates and Action Items:

1. Racism Report and VC Meeting:

  • A meeting with the Vice-Chancellor (VC) regarding the Racism Report was canceled last minute. However, there is a commitment to work together on anti-racism projects, such as training initiatives.

  • The team is awaiting further correspondence to move forward.

2. Election Nominations:

  • Nominations for BIPOC Executive roles are open, and more promotion is needed to ensure all roles are filled. Team members are encouraged to promote the roles in residence halls and social media.

  • Aleesya and Selena are working on a graphic to promote the election, which will be published by next Thursday.

3. BIPOC Base Mural Defacement:

  • The mural at BIPOC Base has been defaced three times. The culprit was not an ANU student, and the university has offered to install a lockable signboard for protection. However, some words in the mural were deemed "harmful."

  • Despite these setbacks, the department has consensus to move forward with redoing the mural, including the phrase "From the river to the sea," which had been questioned. The rescheduled mural event will take place on Thursday, Week 10.

4. Treasurer’s Update:

  • The department earned $6,722.29 from the BIPOC Ball, and the final expenses are being settled. ANUSA provided a $9,000 budget, with $6,000 allocated for the BIPOC Base and $3,000 for the Racism Report.

  • Suggestions for the BIPOC Base include a permanent mural, sandwich boards, DJ decks, speakers, and new flags.

5. BASC Mixer Recap:

  • The turnout for the BASC Mixer was lower than expected, but the event went well overall. Photos from the mixer will be available by Friday.

6. Moodboard Event Success:

  • The Moodboard event exceeded expectations in terms of turnout. Discussions are underway for an end-of-year event, with ideas such as a Chai & Chats gathering, potluck, picnic at Kambri, or dinner after the final collective meeting.

7. Publicity and Upcoming Posts:

  • Recent posts include promotions for the Moodboard event and mural. Upcoming posts will feature videos for executive nominations, election countdowns, and content from the BIPOC x BASC Mixer.

Next Steps:

  • Continue promoting BIPOC Executive roles and finalize election materials.

  • Prepare for the rescheduled mural event and consider additional security measures.

  • Plan the end-of-year event and gather feedback on desired improvements for the BIPOC Base from the community.
